Established in 1980, the Craig Gilbert Scholarship is the oldest and most prestigious scholarship in the Plano Independent School District.
Citizenship has been and will continue to be one of the key factors that maintains the strength and solidarity of the Plano community. It is a quality that has always been exhibited to a very high degree by faculty and students in the Plano school system. It is the goal of the Craig Gilbert Scholarship to highlight the importance of good citizenship and to give tangible recognition to its influence on the community.
Hired in the mid 1970's as the first full-time athletic trainer in Plano, Craig Gilbert was one of the most admired and loved coaches and teachers in the Plano school system. To his students and the whole community, he modeled good citizenship, and he passed on those qualities to thousands of his students. Ultimately, he lost his life in a tragic accident while he was helping others in a time of need. The scholarship fund was established at that time to memorialize Craig and ensure that his legacy of selfless service and helping those in need continues to be cultivated and recognized within the student population in Plano.
A scholarship program to promote and recognize outstanding citizenship could bear no better name than Craig Gilbert’s. The goal of the scholarship program is to annually award $3,000 to a graduating senior from all three of Plano's senior high schools. With this award, it our privilege to recognize students of high character who put the needs of others above themselves.
We will interview the three finalists for each school via Zoom. Thank you for taking the time to apply for this scholarship!
This has been posted on SchooLinks and in the Scholarship Directory.
