Painting Tips:
- You can only use WATER-BASED EXTERIOR LATEX paint.
- Consider the cost of paint when designing your spot! Spots must be painted to exactly match the approved design. Changes to color / design must be approved by Admin, which can result in spot assignment delays.
- We recommend you purchase paint and supplies before the painting weekends as supplies can run low at our local stores. Head to Home Depot or Lowe's now and get everything you need well in advance. Their paint department knows their stuff!
- It will take a gallon of paint to cover the space, if you put down a base coat. Remember you HAVE TO paint over last year’s design. A product that is a paint with primer built in is a smart buy. Bring 2" or 3" blue painter's tape to achieve a clean, straight outline of your space. Confirm your paint is water-based exterior latex paint.
- Some people have had success using paint like Valspar Season Flex Paint + Primer Exterior.
- If you are painting a base coat it takes less than 20 minutes to completely dry.
- Suggested tools:
- ๐งน Broom
- ๐๏ธ Paint scraper/brush
- ๐จ Primer coat (if you have not purchased priming through Plano West Choir Booster Club)
- ๐๏ธ Roller
- ๐๏ธ Long pole to attach roller to. Bring an extension handle paint roller with a 12" roller that is at least 2" in diameter. Having extra rollers, or cut in brushes would be helpful.
- ๐จ Stencils and chalk for drawing outlines. (Chalk will disappear after painting, but it works great for putting down your sketch.) Hula hoops work great as a large circular stencil.
- ๐จ Painter's tape. Remember, your contract requires that you leave a 4" border around your design. This means that there should be 4" between the edge of your design and the white parking space divider lines, as well as the parking space number.
- ๐งนLarge trash bags, and plastic grocery bags. There is a lot of trash generated (paint cans, brushes, rollers, trays, used painter's tape, water bottles, soft drinks, lunch sacks, etc..). A plastic trash bag or a paint tarp is handy to put your paint can, paint lid and paint tray/plastic insert on so no paint drips on to the concrete. A smaller plastic grocery bag makes an impromptu glove to remove a saturated paint roller from the metal holder. Please clean up your area before you leave.
- There are no electrical outlets, water sources or bathrooms nearby. Plan accordingly.
- You will get paint on you. Wear old clothes and shoes.Bring plenty of ice and water to drink.
- Gardening knee pads are great when working on details and lawn chairs during drying wait times.
- Stay hydrated!
